Course Description: A program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to lay out, cut, fabricate, erect, install and repair structures and fixtures using hand and power tools. Includes instruction in technical mathematics, framing, construction materials and selection, job estimating, blueprint reading, foundations and roughing-in, finish carpentry techniques, and applicable codes and standards.

Program Description:  

Carpentry students work on construction projects within the school and community. They learn skills including: transit and blueprint reading, selection of building materials and estimating, framing (floors, stairs, walls, and roofs), selection and installation of windows and doors, roofing, interior and exterior finishing, concrete finishing, and foundations. Career opportunities range from a siding installer to a finish carpenter and may begin in high school with a Co-Op position providing job experience and a salary. The 500 employers in the Lebanon County Builders Association sponsor this program, provide student scholarships, and employ graduates. Students who successfully complete the program may receive college credits from HACC, Penn College of Technology, and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.


Two Year Half-Day Program

Year One:  8:00am – 10:25am (36 weeks – 3 credits)
 Year Two:  11:25am – 2:00pm (36 weeks – 3 credits)


Program Costs:

Students are required to purchase the following at an estimated cost of $100.

Biography

My name is Mr. Hinton, and I am a third-generational carpenter born and raised in Lancaster County. I am a 2001 graduate of the carpentry program of the Brownstown Lancaster CTC. I have worked as a carpenter for the last 20+ years, mastering many aspects of the trades, living in various countries around the world with my family, as well as owning my own contracting business for 7 years. I have taught building trades most recently in Costa Rica from 2015 – 2020. After moving back to the United States in February of 2020, I accepted a position as an Instructor with the Lancaster County CTC and have moved on to fill the Lebanon position. I am fluent in Spanish and English so feel free to write or call in either. I look forward to working with your child and providing them with a quality, rewarding, and challenging trade.

Grading Scale

The LCCTC grading system incorporates three components: competencies (skill— 33.3%), career skills (work ethic— 33.3%), and theory (knowledge—33.3%). Each academic class implements a performance evaluation/student grading system that incorporates career skills (work ethic), and theory (knowledge). Each component is weighted equally.

Progress Reports

Students will receive a “Progress Report” each mid-quarter through the mail for any student with a 70% or less, and a “Report Card” will be given to each student at the end of each quarter.  It is the student's responsibility to share this information with their parents/guardians.   Both reports will utilize student performance data obtained from competencies, career skills, and theory grades.

Please Note: 40% is the minimum grade for the first 3 marking periods.  However, students with excessive absences may be assigned an earned grade with administrative approval.  There is no minimum grade for the 4th marking period.
